Betting guides for Irish bettors

Six guides on how betting works — no tips, no promotions

Our guides explain the parts of betting that confuse people most: how odds are written, what racing words mean on a bet slip, how GAA markets are settled, what happens when you bet in-play or cash out, and whether an app is worth installing. Each is written for readers in Ireland, with examples from the sports people here follow — racing, Gaelic football, hurling, football and rugby.

None of them will tell you what to back. Betting is entertainment with a real risk of loss, most bets lose, and understanding a market does not change that. What a guide can do is make sure you know exactly what you are agreeing to before you confirm a bet.

Choosing a bookmaker in Ireland

A short list of questions to ask before you open an account: does the bookmaker hold a GRAI remote betting licence, does it cover the sports you follow, which euro payment methods does it list, and how easy is it to set limits? Read it alongside our reviews to see which bookmaker fits the way you bet — or whether you need a new account at all.

Odds

Fractional and decimal odds

What 5/2 and 3.50 actually mean, how to convert one into the other, and how to read the chance a price implies. It also covers evens, odds-on and odds-against, and why the prices across a market add up to more than 100%.

Racing

Racing betting terms

Each way, place terms, starting price, ante-post, non-runners and Rule 4 — the language of an Irish racecard and bet slip, with worked examples. Worth reading before the big meetings at Leopardstown, Cheltenham, Punchestown or Galway.

Live

In-play, live streaming and cash out

What changes once a match or race is under way: how in-play prices move, why markets are suspended, what a bookmaker may ask before you can watch a stream, and how full, partial and automatic cash out work. Cash out is offered at the bookmaker’s discretion and can be withdrawn at any moment.

Apps

Betting apps: app or mobile site?

The difference between a bookmaker’s app and its mobile website, why you should install an app only from the official App Store or Google Play, and which settings — limits, reality checks, notifications — are worth turning on first.

Reader questions. Short answers to what readers ask us most: whether online betting is legal in Ireland, how to check a licence on the GRAI register, how old you must be, how we are paid, what our stars mean, how to complain about a bookmaker and where to get help.

How we rate. The five questions behind our star ratings — Irish sport coverage, live betting and streaming, app and site, payments in euro, safer-betting tools — and what we leave out.

Safer betting. Deposit limits, reality checks, time-outs and self-exclusion, and who to call in Ireland if betting stops being fun.

How we write our guides

What you can expect from every page

Our guides describe how bets work and how they are settled. When a guide mentions what bookmakers do, it is based on what bookmakers publish for customers in Ireland — their terms, rules and help pages — and on the GRAI register, with the date we checked. Rules differ between bookmakers, so the bookmaker’s own terms always decide how your bet is settled.

  • Prices in our examples are illustrative, not current odds, and none of them is a tip.
  • We do not cover betting on underage or schools competitions, and we do not use real players to sell a bet.
  • We describe promotions only where a term needs it: a promotion is set by the bookmaker, and its terms are what count.
  • Every bookmaker in the strip below the guides holds a GRAI remote betting licence. Links to bookmakers are advertising; this is how we are paid.

Set a deposit limit before you start, and keep betting to money you can afford to lose. If it is causing you worry, the GamblingCare National Helpline is open 24/7 on 1800 936 725. Spotted a mistake in a guide? Tell us.
